Clothing Line May Sew Up Revenues
for Byway Organization
A 501-c-3 byway organization tests byway-theme clothing
as potential new revenue source.
Who/What/When/Where:
In August 2005, the 501-c-3 organization that promotes
the Coulee Corridor Scenic Byway in Washington State began test marketing
a line of byway label clothing, i.e., shirts and caps.
The image on the shirts and caps includes a car and
the words “Cruise’n the Coulee Corridor Scenic Byway” embroidered
by a local t-shirt storefront business.
How:
A
member of the all-volunteer byway organization funded the initial
purchase of one shirt and one hat to test the color scheme. The shirt
shown here was a first-run item. The thread color on the shirt and
hat was changed to white so the lettering shows more clearly.
The items will be offered online via the byway’s
website and through vendors located along the byway. Initially, the
vendors will display a photo of the items and take orders that will
be delivered direct to consumer or to store for consumer pickup.
If the initial test goes well, a larger quantity of the items will
be requested on a second order.
Funding Potential:
The caps retail for $20; cost to the byway is $9.50/hat.
The high-quality shirt cost $51.00; a retail price had not yet been
set for the shirt. A 30 percent markup and prepaid order-only terms
were anticipated. Presumably as higher quantities are ordered, wholesale
cost to the byway organization will decrease.
Why Byway-Theme Clothing:
• Supports byway awareness-building
• Meets visitor demand for byway-based souvenirs
