Seaway Trail Dive Site Stewardship
DST Home || Dive Sites || The Shipwreck Environment || Site Stewardship Under contract with Seaway Trail, New York Sea Grant is coordinating the establishment of five model scuba diving sites along the 454-mile Seaway Trail Scenic Byway. This project involves:
The dive site system includes the New York State David W. Mills Submerged Cultural Preserve and Dive Site near Oswego, the Eagle Wings Dive Site near Clayton and three additional sites under development. The Mills site represents a beginner-level boat access dive site. The Eagle Wings Dive Site in the St. Lawrence River is the natural features dive site. The remaining three will be examples of different diving experiences representing an advanced deep historic dive site, a shore-access dive site, and an intermediate site. These sites may include characteristics of historic shipwrecks, non-shipwreck dive sites, artificial reefs, submerged land sites, activity-based interactive dive sites, drift diving sites, and others. Each will be accessible from some point along the Seaway Trail. Expectations of Site Stewardship
Minimally, site stewards will:
Stewards may also undertake to:
Site stewards will not own the dive site, and may not make representations of ownership or of acting as agents of New York State, Seaway Trail or New York Sea Grant. Ownership of the sites remains with New York State. Site stewards cannot make rules and regulations contrary to those provided in New York State law or its agency's policies, nor restrict access to any individual or group, nor charge for access. New York Sea Grant / Seaway TrailTo assist site stewards, New York Sea Grant and Seaway Trail are providing funding for development of the promotional and interpretive materials for the first five sites, and for consulting services for the stewards. The success of the first five sites may be used to leverage additional funding for more sites along the trail.
